The National Museum of Colombo was established on 1 January 1877, by Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The museum holds many important collections including the throne and crown of the Kandyan monarchs.<br/><br/>

Since 1885, by law, a copy of every document printed in the country has to be deposited in the museum library. At present the library accommodates over 12 million titles.
